The Nacoochee Indian Mound was the center of the Ancient Cherokee town of Gauxule, visited by DeSoto in 1540 according to legend in his search for gold. Legend also relates that Indian lovers, Sautee and Nacoochee, from opposing tribes are buried in the mound. In reality, the mound is a burial site with the graves probably being placed there before the Cherokee Tribe inhabited the area. Excavation in 1915 unearthed 75 burials that appeared to have taken place over a number of years. This was one of the earliest scientific excavations of its kind in Georgia.
